Andy Robson
I graduated in Fine Art from UWE Bristol in 1999 and I’ve enjoyed being a studio holder at BV Studios since 2015.
My current body of work explores colourful, playful paintings inspired by diagrams from geography textbooks. I am fascinated by the processes that shape our planet—plate tectonics, magnetic fields, weather systems—yet I approach them not as a scientist but as an artist.
Rather than seeking definitive explanations, I’m drawn to what lies beyond science: intuition, play, and mystery.
By stripping away the labels and explanations from these familiar diagrams, I transform them into quietly disorientating visual puzzles. Each painting begins with the deconstruction of a diagram, but its outcome is guided less by planning than by spontaneity and intuition.
The work develops through discovery, and that process is as vital to me as the finished piece.
I aim to spark curiosity, humour, and an inquisitive response—inviting viewers to engage with both the knowable and the unknowable. For me, art is a tool for communication, self-expression, and transformation, offering a way for others to connect with their inner world and share in my vision of the indescribable.
