Ruth Wallace
Working mainly in drawing media, I explore themes of memory, absence and female identity. Empty domestic interiors are a recurring motif, with their traces of people which still resonate when the people themselves have gone.
Many of my drawings explore the borderland between absence and presence and ideas of walls holding stories and ghosts within them. I also frequently return to the human head, itself a repository of memories and narratives, as the subject for series of drawings.
I hold a BA from Bath Academy of Art and an MA in Fine Art from the University of the West of England. I worked in publishing for many years and also administered arts projects whilst my children were young and, since 2008, I have been working from studios in Bristol and also teaching at the Royal West of England Academy Drawing School. I have been based at BV Studios since they opened in 2010. My work has been exhibited across the UK and internationally, has won awards and is held in private collections.
