Maria Jose Carvallo
Maria Jose Carvallo (b. 1987 Chile) is based in Bristol, UK and works in painting, video and installation. She graduated from Universidad Católica of Chile, School of Psychology in 2011 and School of Art in 2013, studying in BSc Psychology and BA Fine Art. She completed an MA in Fine Art at the Chelsea College of Arts in 2015, where was recipient of CONICYT a Chilean Government Scholarship for international postgraduate studies.
Carvallo has had works exhibited in Chile, UK, Italy, and China.
Maria Jose researchs, both theoretical and pictorial, the image of the female body grounded in her cultural context. Her work is a depiction of my reflections around gender and the human conditions, as frailty, nude, flesh and disgrace. Her practice consists in the
creation of images, objects and narratives inspired in representations of women from cultural resources and Art History. She creates watercolour paintings, wax sculpture, material found, embroidery, ready-made objects and objects from personal collections.​​
